Hey Lindy, I also was not very familiar with the Waldorf Education eothmd. I really like the question you raise about wether students can be engaged in a lesson and not having fun, and does having fun matter? Like your own students, some of my most memorable moments from middle school and even high school is when I was able to have fun with what I was learning. I think that it would be impossible for every child to have fun all of the time in school, because people have different interest. Although, i think it would be extremely beneficial to find more projects like your Salem witch project, so that the students could at least take interest in what they are learning. Also because of the strict curriculum that K-12 has to follow, i think it becomes hard to break that mold of doing what we have to do in order to help the kids have fun with it. I think that the Waldorf eothmd might harbor more curious and happy learners, and i think that mainstream K-12 could use some of their eothmds to get the children to want to be more involved in school.
